It is analyzed that aespa member Karina inevitably suffered image damage due to a political controversy.
According to the June idol individual brand reputation index released by the Korea Corporate Reputation Research Institute, Karina ranked 43rd. Girl group members ranked close to Karina included YooA of Oh My Girl at #39 and Arin of Oh My Girl at #45.
In the same period, Karina ranked only 26th in the girl group individual brand reputation index for June, following IVE’s Leeseo (#24) and TWICE’s Mina (#25).
For Karina, who had consistently been within the top 10 of the idol individual brand reputation index, this represents a sharp decline. She previously ranked #4 in February, 5th in March, and 7th in April, consistently competing with top-tier idols like BlackPink's Rose and Jennie, as well as IVE’s Jang Wonyoung and Ahn Yujin.
As Karina’s ranking dropped, aespa’s group brand reputation ranking, which had consistently stayed within the top 5, also fell to 14th in June.
The drop in Karina’s brand reputation index is believed to stem from a political controversy she became embroiled in ahead of South Korea’s 21st presidential election.
On May 27, just before the election, Karina posted a photo on her Instagram, sharing an update from Japan. In the photo, she wore an outfit featuring red and black colors along with the number 2, which sparked speculation about implied political messaging. Some accused Karina of supporting the conservative People Power Party and then-candidate Kim Moon-soo.
She further fueled speculation by including a rose emoji in the post, which some interpreted as an allusion to the so-called "Rose Election" (a nickname for the 21st presidential election).
