On the 20th, the phrase “Lee Dongwook: Koreans don’t eat mooncakes” appeared in real-time discussion topics on Weibo, a Chinese social media platform. The number of related posts on Weibo has reached 32,000, with views exceeding 100 million, drawing significant attention.

The comment by Lee Dongwook that Chinese netizens are taking issue with was made during last year's Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving). In September last year, on the fan platform Bubble, when some Chinese fans asked, “Do Koreans also eat mooncakes during Chuseok?”, Lee responded, “Chinese fans-ah, Koreans don’t eat mooncakes. We celebrate the holiday differently.”

He went on to say, “Stop talking about mooncakes. We eat songpyeon,” he added.

Lee Dongwook’s remarks were translated into Chinese and spread across local social media platforms. Chinese netizens criticized him for using an rolling eyes emoji when he said, “Chinese fans-ah, Koreans don’t eat mooncakes,” interpreting it as an act of disrespect toward Chinese culture (specifically mooncakes). Some Chinese users also claimed, “Korea will probably start insisting mooncakes are their own food now.”
