Over 150 letters written during his service
Actor Kim Soohyun's letters to his actual girlfriend, written during his military service, have been revealed, weakening the long-circulated suspicions of him having "dated a MN."
According to Ko Sang-rok, partner lawyer at Law Firm Phil, Kim Soohyun, who enlisted in October 2017 and served in the front-line DMZ reconnaissance unit, wrote to his girlfriend whenever he had time. From January 2018 until just before his discharge, he penned about 150 letters, delivering them in person during his leaves and receiving replies in return.
In a diary entry dated July 30, 2018, he wrote:
"I will definitely travel with her around this time next year. I want to do new things, things I've never done before, all with her. We'll go far, for a long time, always. I want us to cherish and love each other endlessly, but also fight, reconcile, sulk, and experience so many things together.”
On August 3 of the same year, he wrote:
"Every day in the unit feels like a crash of reality, but what's clear is that I'm treating her better than before I enlisted... I keep missing her and wanting to see her. I'm so grateful I can make her feel good and happy. I also reflect on myself a lot. I'm grateful every single day that she's waiting for me."
Lawyer Ko commented on these writings, saying, "These are genuine reflections of his inner thoughts and circumstances at the time. They cannot be fabricated and hold high credibility as legal evidence." He explained that the letters prove Kim Soohyun's focus during his service was on his real girlfriend.
The letters he sent to her were described as "essays shared with an acquaintance."
The "letter to the deceased" from Kim Soohyun's military service, which became the subject of controversy, was of a different nature. It was not a personal exchange with a girlfriend, but rather a piece containing reflections on military life and plans for after discharge. At the time, Kim Soohyun would often send letters to acquaintances during his service as a way to maintain a sense of connection with the outside world, and the letter sent to the deceased was part of that practice.
The phrase "I miss you" in the letter, in context, expressed the frustration of military life and his longing for leave.
The following passages included plans such as "I will travel to Japan and Northern Europe after discharge," confirming that the content was written on the premise of a future with his actual girlfriend.
Photos and postcards served as proof of the actual period of their relationship.
Kim Soohyun's relationship with the deceased began in the latter half of 2019, after she had become an adult. A postcard dated November 1, 2019, included lines such as "From now on, I'll nag you a lot and show more care," and "Even if we fight, I'll be the first to apologize and give in." These are the kind of common promises exchanged between couples who have just started dating.
In addition, photos dated December 14, 2019, December 24, 2019, and January 22, 2020 have been confirmed, all from the period after the deceased had entered university.
If their relationship had truly extended back to middle school, there should be photos or records spanning that long period. However, no such additional materials have been presented. On the contrary, all the objective evidence currently disclosed shows that their relationship began only after she became an adult.
The starting point of this matter was a "draft statement" the deceased sent to an acquaintance on March 25, 2024. That document included the claim that they had dated from 2015 to 2021, but parts of it were found to be inconsistent with the chronological facts.
Kim Soohyun's side subsequently clarified the actual dating period and the nature of the relationship based on objective evidence such as photos, postcards, and letters written during his military service. All currently disclosed materials consistently support that the relationship began after the deceased had become an adult.
Lawyer Ko Sang-rok of the Law Firm Phil stated, "The facts are clear."
Regarding this case, Ko explained, "The approximately 150 letters Kim Soohyun wrote during his military service were not newly created materials to defend anyone, they were naturally written records from that time. These materials consistently support the same facts and can be recognized as strong legal evidence."
Furthermore, it was explained that "the single letter sent to the deceased during military service does not constitute evidence of a relationship, falling within the same category as the general correspondence the actor exchanged with acquaintances at the time." It was added that "considering the photographs and postcards already made public, it is clear that the actual relationship commenced after adulthood."
