Actor Ma Dongseok received 4 billion won (2.9M USD) per episode for KBS2’s Twelve.
He filmed 8 episodes in total, earning a staggering 40 billion won (29M USD) in appearance fees. Park Hyungsik, who played the role of Oh-gwi, received the next highest amount, 4 billion won (2.9M USD) per episode, totaling 32 billion (16M won) for all 8 episodes.
Other cast members such as Sung Dong-il, Seo Inguk, Kang Mina, Ye Soo-jung, Lee Joo-bin, Ko Kyu-pil, Kim Chan-hyung, and Regina Lei received significantly lower fees. Reportedly, the combined total of their fees didn’t even reach 1 billion won (72K USD).

In other words, the majority of the talent fees went to Ma Dongseok and Park Hyungsik, accounting for about 34% of the total production budget. Once you subtract the scriptwriting fees (Kim Bong-han and Ma Dongseok) and directing costs (Kang Dae-gyu and Han Yoon-sun), the actual production budget shrinks even more.
Still, the actors' appearance fees alone accounted for over 30% of the total budget, a level that inevitably impacts the overall quality of the show.
Drama insiders commented, “Generally, it’s considered appropriate for lead actors’ fees to be around 10–15% of the production budget. If it goes over 40%, the project becomes unviable. Even 30% is too high.”
Another insider added, “In the case of Twelve, the appearance fees for the two leads were just too high. In fantasy dramas, post-production is everything,” lamenting that “the quality of the latter half of the show seems to have suffered due to the inflated fees.”
“Fantasy as a genre lives or dies on its post-production. It requires a huge budget for CG and other effects.
Isn’t that why Netflix often casts rookies for fantasy series?” (Drama insider)
