Sunye (real name Min Sunye, 36 years old), a former member of the group Wonder Girls, faced criticism after posting a message mourning the death of Charlie Kirk, a close associate of U.S. President Donald Trump, on the 17th. In response, she stated, “Are you laughing about the death of a human life?”
On her social media, Sunye wrote, “After watching a video containing an appeal from (Charlie Kirk’s) wife, I posted a memorial message with a heavy heart as a fellow person living as a mother,” adding, “Then, people I’ve never met came to my space and insulted me. Why do you go to such lengths?”
She continued, “A person has died. So, are you laughing with the mindset that ‘it served them right’ about the death of a human life?” She emphasized, “Beyond my identity as a professional, mother, or woman, I mourned the tragic death of a person as a human being.”
Sunye shared, “I live my life contemplating how to leave behind a slightly better world for my children than the one they have now,” and added, “Although our views and thoughts differ, I believe that through beautiful clashes born from our differences, we can move toward a better world.”
She further urged, “Do not reduce me to political or religious issues,” and requested, “Please refrain from disrespectful and dehumanizing remarks in my space.”
Earlier, Sunye had posted a memorial message on social media for Charlie Kirk, founder and CEO of the U.S. conservative youth organization Turning Point USA. Some netizens criticized her for this. Charlie Kirk died on the 10th of last month after being shot by an assailant during a speech at Utah Valley University in Utah.
During his lifetime, Charlie Kirk was a controversial figure, advocating for gun ownership rights based on Christian values and criticizing abortion, h*m*s***ality, and transgender rights.
In South Korea, some netizens launched malicious comment attacks against celebrities who posted memorial messages for Charlie Kirk, including Super Junior member Choi Siwon, actors Jin Seo-yeon, and Choi Joon-yong.
