Okay, this might be a weird thing to say out loud but… this has been on my mind ever since I got into K-pop years ago. Like… imagine having to perform ITZY’s “ICY” in full glam while battling the red demon. You’re out there jumping, snapping your neck, doing full-body cardio disguised as a dance routine, and meanwhile your uterus is throwing a party you didn’t ask for.
Idols are out here doing comeback promos, full choreo, fansigns, variety shows, and looking flawless the whole time, but half the population knows how violent periods can be. So like… how do they survive this while being mic’d up in light coloured outfits and dancing under hot stage lights?
Well, some idols have actually talked about it.
1. “Pop a pill and pray” -- Daisy (ex-MOMOLAND)
Daisy said it straight on TikTok: most idols just pop painkillers, use tampons, and get on with it. She even said stylists are pretty understanding — like, if someone says they’re on their period, stylists will avoid giving them white clothes (bless them). But still, the overall vibe is: suffer in silence, queen, the show must go on.
2. “You think other idols get to rest?” -- Tina (ex-Blady)
Tina (know her? remember her?) said that when she once asked for a break because of period cramps, her company literally told her: “Do you think other K-pop idols get to rest?” 😐 Like??? The industry really said no uterus, no opinion, but also if you have one, shut up about it. And she wasn’t even allowed to wear dark pants during that time, it had to be light-colored outfits, for the “aesthetic.” Just imagine performing in tight, pastel shorts while trying not to die.
3. “Sometimes you have to delay your period with the pill” -- Serri (Dal Shabet)
Serri gave us a real look behind the curtain. She said idols often use tampons for comfort during heavy dance routines (pads just feel awful), but also admitted that when a comeback involves something wild (like a full-day shoot or water scenes) some idols will take birth control pills to delay their period altogether. But she was honest about the downsides too: nausea, hormonal bloating, mood swings… while still needing to look camera-ready. So yeah. Idols suffer too. Shocker!
4. “It’s hard pretending to smile” -- Pristin (feat. Heechul)
Pristin members once talked about this on We Like Zines and said periods are a huge inconvenience during idol schedules. They said they’d get cramps or feel low energy, but had to act like they were fine. Heechul chimed in too, saying how he knows female idols who go through depression during periods because of the stress + pressure to stay cheerful for the public.
Basically: everyone expects girl groups to smile and slay 24/7, even when they're battling their literal hormones backstage.
The Unspoken Truth: A Lot of Idols Lose Their Periods
Some fans and ex-idols have said that due to extreme dieting, underweight conditions, and stress, a lot of idols stop menstruating altogether. Which is… not cute. Not healthy. And not surprising, given how grueling their schedules and diet restrictions are.
Ashley (Ladies’ Code) once said she didn’t get hers for years.
They’re basically surviving on air, coffee, and negative thoughts. Add in 3 hours of choreo, 4 rehearsals, and a 2 a.m. live, the body taps out eventually.
So What Do They Actually Do?
From what ex-idols have shared + what fans suspect: 1. Tampons + painkillers = standard survival kit 2. Some wear extra padding or backup outfits. Stylists usually keep spares nearby or adjust the outfits, but not always. 3. Birth control to delay periods during tough schedules. 5. “Suck it up” is still the default company policy.
It’s kinda wild how something so common, so normal, is still a taboo in an industry built on physical performance. These idols smile, dance, and power through schedules that would knock any of us out, all while dealing with something companies barely acknowledge.
It makes you wonder what else we expect idols to endure in silence.
Anyway, respect to the girlies who hit those notes and battle the monthly boss at the same time!
