Lots of the most popular groups' members have gone into the acting route (especially visuals) or have become variety stars, while a few of them have actually become successful soloists. But I also realized that they were able to do that because at that time you had to promote a lot on variety shows and that alone made you known to the gp, making it easier for idols to transition into other fields.
But nowadays, staring around the 4th gen, variety shows or other activities that make you popular with the gp have become less relevant and instead companies are focused on creating more fandom oriented content, which is ideal if you want to build a fanbase that is willing to buy every stuff you put out and sell out concerts. But this strategy is only good in the short term, because lots of groups (with similar concepts) debut every year and as time goes on that same fanbase will inevitably switch to newer groups. We're seeing this happen with txt and nct dream already. So what other choice do the members have at that point? stay in a group that is slowly becoming less and less relevant or flop and be nugus? Ofc they'd want to stay in the group, it's the most logical and convenient choice. My point is that they don't have the same freedom as older idols to do other stuff once they become seniors. It also doesn't help that most idols nowadays are mid at everything and boring af on top of that.
So my question is, are they going to promote nonstop for 20+ years or are they gonna get sick of the idol life once they hit their 30s and leave the industry all together? And what would be the consequences for future generations? Share your opinions~
