[theqoo] [EXCLUSIVE] AKMU, ENDS 12-YEAR PARTNERSHIP WITH YG... STARTS INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES STARTING NEXT YEAR

Musician AKMU (Lee Chanhyuk and Lee Suhyun) will be leaving YG Entertainment and becoming independent.

According to an Xports News report on the 21st, AKMU will be leaving YG Entertainment at the end of December and will be going independent, not transferring. AKMU is reportedly discussing establishing their own company with their longtime YG Entertainment manager.

A music industry insider revealed the background, saying, "A few months ago, Lee Chanhyuk, Lee Suhyun, and executive producer Yang Hyunsuk had a meal, and I understand that the conversation naturally turned to the future direction of AKMU's activities." They continued, "CEO Yang, who has been watching the members closely for 12 years, said that free activities in a new environment other than YG would be another driving force for AKMU's growth, and encouraged their independence."

Previously, AKMU showed extraordinary determination by renewing their contract with YG Entertainment at the end of their seven-year contract in 2021. Regarding the unusually long-term five-year contract renewal at the time, Lee Chanhyuk expressed his trust by saying, "For seven years, it is a company that has supported us steadfastly in the direction we want to go without a single bit of friction or disagreement, and has guided us well as your people."

All eyes are on what AKMU will do next after ending their 12-year partnership with YG Entertainment.
