A so-called ‘idol union’ to protect the rights and interests of popular culture artists, including idols, is expected to launch as early as this year. The union plans to focus on improving idols' working conditions and strengthening psychological and human rights protection systems after its launch. Attention is focused on whether this will mark a turning point in changing the working environment for popular culture artists like idols.
According to the Idol Union Preparatory Committee on the 6th, the committee submitted its establishment application to the Seongnam Regional Office of the Ministry of Employment and Labor last September. On the 13th of last month, it submitted additional documents requested by the labor office to strengthen the evidence of worker status. The preparatory committee anticipates receiving approval for the union's establishment from the labor office as early as this month.
The Preparatory Committee has requested the government to:
- Enact a standard agency manual including mandatory responses to malicious comments
- Implement regular psychological evaluations and connections to specialized institutions
- Review regulations for administrative sanctions and public penalties against violating agencies
- Clarify the interpretation of worker status and improve related systems.
Currently, about 10 idols have expressed intent to join the union, with singer Ailee confirmed as the first publicly participating member. Mr. Bang Min-soo (stage name Cap), formerly of the group Teen Top, serves as the preparatory committee chairperson.
