[theqoo] WHEN MIN HEEJIN WAS SERVING AS THE CEO OF ADOR, EACH EMPLOYEE KEPT A DOCUMENT MONITORING "EACH IDOL COPYING NEWJEANS" FOLLOWING HER DIRECTIVE

A claim has been made that, during Min Heejin’s tenure as CEO of ADOR, employees were instructed by her to create monitoring documents asserting that “each idol group copied NewJeans.”

Belift Lab, the agency of the group ILLIT and a HYBE label, revealed this during the fourth hearing of the damages lawsuit it filed against former CEO Min on the 14th at the Seoul Western District Court.

Belift Lab argued, “When ILLIT’s debut schedule was made public on February 27 last year, ADOR’s Deputy Director A planned to threaten HYBE by coordinating a manipulation attack using music that had not even been released. And on March 18, 2024, the day ILLIT’s debut teaser was released, they showed an analyst a maliciously edited short-form video defaming ILLIT and induced them to write a ‘sell report’ recommending the sale of HYBE stock.”

Belift Lab further claimed that, under Min’s direction, ADOR employees created monitoring documents asserting that several idols were copying NewJeans. They stated, “Former CEO Min created monitoring documents not only for HYBE but also for male and female groups from other entertainment companies, and as the plan became more concrete, she chose ILLIT, who had just debuted and had a relatively small fandom, as the scapegoat.”

Belift Lab continued, “It seems she may also have considered that because ILLIT is a girl group, she could instill an unfounded fear in the parents of NewJeans that ILLIT could become a ‘replacement’ for NewJeans, making it easier for her to hide behind them while pushing the parents to the forefront.”

Belift Lab stated that the supposed grounds for plagiarism in the copy-monitoring document created by Min’s side consisted entirely of community posts, comments, and maliciously edited short videos. They also demonstrated at the hearing example footage showing how isolating a few seconds of individual choreography moves and editing them in a patchwork manner could make it appear copied.

They also submitted as evidence Min’s KakaoTalk messages in which she instructed NewJeans to appear with Director B on a popular YouTube channel in a manner suggesting that another idol group was a “NewJeans copycat.”

Belift Lab emphasized, “Above all, former CEO Min’s public statements and press conference were nothing more than a publicity campaign aimed solely at defamation and damaging reputations, without any objective comparative analysis.” They presented precedent showing that making plagiarism allegations without an objective verification process constitutes intent to defame, adding that “(Min’s raising of plagiarism claims) clearly falls under unlawful conduct that cannot be protected as freedom of expression.”

They further criticized Min for being extremely wary of having her KakaoTalk messages revealed in court, claiming that numerous clues, including repeated references to ‘media warfare’ and ‘public opinion warfare’, demonstrated her intent to defame.

“Min portrayed herself as a righteous whistleblower to place herself on the side of ‘good people,’ incited the public by suggesting there was no need to listen to the other side, and victimized herself,” they said. “Following Min’s plagiarism accusations, ILLIT’s album orders plummeted, additional production was halted, scheduled shoots and advertisement campaigns were canceled, and members suffered from malicious comments, causing enormous tangible and intangible damage.” They also presented materials that they said substantiated these claims.
