[theqoo] SHINEE KEY, ALTHOUGH I'M LATE, I EXPLAINED, APOLOGIZED AND STOPPED

SHINee member Key has personally addressed and apologized for the so-called ‘injection auntie’ allegations 12 days after they surfaced. While his statement wasn't particularly swift, he did not choose to remain silent on the matter.

The controversy began on the 6th when allegations surfaced that broadcaster Park Narae had received illegal injection treatments. Subsequently, Key also became embroiled in suspicions that he had received illegal medical procedures through the same individual, referred to as “Mrs. A,” alongside Park Narae. Photos and videos believed to be of Key's pet dog were posted on Mrs. A's social media, fueling speculation about Key's connection to him.

On the 17th, Key bowed his head and apologized via his personal SNS, stating, “I sincerely apologize for causing concern with the various stories circulating about me.” He also acknowledged responsibility for the delayed statement, explaining, “I was confused and flustered.” Notably, his apology centered on his own failure to reflect, rather than shifting blame externally. His agency, SM Entertainment, also released an official statement the same day, explaining that Key had been receiving medical treatment believing Mrs. A to be a doctor and only became aware of the truth through the recent controversy over her medical license. SM stated that Key recognized the seriousness of the matter and decided to withdraw from his scheduled activities and programs he was appearing in.

Consequently, he stepped down from tvN's variety show ‘Amazing Saturday’, MBC's variety show ‘I Live Alone’, and his role as MC for MBC's ‘Entertainment Awards’. tvN and MBC issued brief statements saying, “We respect Key's decision to suspend his activities.”

This statement relatively clearly addressed the cause of the controversy, the reason for the delayed announcement, and the subsequent choices. It is also being evaluated as distinct from previous evasive explanations, as it is not merely an expression of regret but an explanation premised on recognizing the problem and taking responsibility.

Of course, criticism that the apology came too late, only after completing the US tour, is hard to avoid. However, considering that a sudden halt to schedules could have caused further confusion, there is also a perspective interpreting this as a judgment made with an awareness of the gravity of the situation.

Key was late, but he explained, apologized, and stopped. Judgment rests with the public, but looking solely at this response, he did not choose to evade responsibility.
