BTS, returning as a full group for the first time in about 3 years and 9 months, will announce their comeback in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul.
According to the Cultural Heritage Administration on the 20th, the Cultural Heritage Committee reviewed and conditionally approved a proposal submitted by BTS's agency HYBE for permission to use and film at Gyeongbokgung Palace and Sungnyemun Gate that afternoon.
The National Heritage Administration specified the condition that “a subcommittee will be formed to review the details (of HYBE's application), including the impact on cultural heritage.”
Consequently, BTS can now film pre-recorded content for their comeback stage at Gyeongbokgung Palace and Gwanghwamun Gate. Filming is expected to take place considering Gyeongbokgung's closed days (every Tuesday).
The group is considering holding the concert on the comeback day, March 20, and the weekend of the 21st and 22nd.
According to Seoul Metropolitan Government and other sources, HYBE requested the use of Gwanghwamun Square, expressing their desire to hold a concert for approximately 18,000 people on the afternoon of Saturday, March 21. They also reportedly applied to hold an event for about 30,000 people at Seoul Plaza.
This marks the first time a solo concert by a specific singer or group will be held at Gwanghwamun Square. While multiple artists have been invited to perform at major cultural events there before, permission for exclusive use has never been granted. Attention is focused on whether this concert at one of Seoul's iconic landmarks will serve as an opportunity to promote Korea.
In the application materials submitted to the National Heritage Agency, HYBE explained, “The event is scheduled to be live-streamed globally to 300 million subscribers across 190 countries via a global online video service (OTT) platform.”
They added, “This could become a global live-streaming event on a scale similar to the World Cup or Olympics,” stating, “Over 50 million viewers will be exposed to K-Heritage and K-Culture.”
The decision on the plaza usage permit and whether the concert will proceed is expected as early as this week or as late as next week.
