[theqoo] JANG WONYOUNG "HONG KONG IS A COUNTRY THAT I LIKE" COMMENT SPARKS OUTRAGE IN CHINA... CALL FOR EXPULSION FROM IVE, BOYCOTT

A controversy surrounding a remark by Jang Wonyoung, a member of the group IVE, is rapidly spreading in China.

Recently, a video titled “MAMA 2025 Behind” was released on IVE’s official YouTube channel. The video shows the members visiting Hong Kong to attend an awards ceremony. During the footage, Jang Wonyoung said, “We should have a delicious dinner,” adding, “I like Hong Kong. There’s a lot of good food. Hong Kong is one of the countries I like.”

The issue arose after this remark was made public. Chinese netizens strongly criticized her for referring to Hong Kong as a “country.”

China defines Hong Kong as a Special Administrative Region of its own territory and upholds the “One China” principle as a core diplomatic stance.

On the Chinese social media platform Weibo, criticisms poured in, such as “Hong Kong is Chinese territory, not a country” and “An ignorant remark by a celebrity has infringed on national sovereignty.” Hashtags like #JangWonyoungHongKongCountry, #IVEGetOutofChina, and #KoreanIdolsHistoryEducation spread rapidly, and some netizens even called for a boycott of IVE-related content.

Local media outlets also joined the criticism. Sina Entertainment pointed out that it was “a clear challenge to China’s territorial sovereignty and integrity,” while Global Times strongly criticized the situation, saying, “Despite knowing the importance of the Chinese market, Korean idols lack understanding of political sensitivities,” and accused them of having a “double standard, profiting from Chinese fans’ consumption while failing to respect China’s sovereignty.”

1. There wasn’t even any uproar in China, but it was fabricated. This morning, Lee Sun-myeong from Sports Kyunghyang wrote this article, it got brought over to TheQoo and sent to the HOT posts section, then people got slammed for it being fabricated and it was deleted. But even after that, they kept spreading the article and circulated it again, and now they’re bringing it back once more.

Those hashtags listed one after another in the article, which supposedly “spread rapidly on Weibo,” don’t even exist.

2. This is so f*cking fake. Seriously female idols should launch an attack on journalists

3. Stop f*cking tormenting female idols ã… ã… ã… ã… ã… ã…

4. F*ck ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ Lee Sung-myeong is also from HYBE ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ He's the guy who was solely in charge of smearing Min Heejin

5. As expected of Lee Sun-myeong being Lee Sun-myeong. Stirring up division, taking sides, and shifting the blame. They don’t seem to realize that this actually looks like a textbook HYBE-style moveã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ Is this the first time we’ve seen trash journalists being fed provocative bait just to rack up clicks? Bluntly speaking, the “other side” they keep insisting on is already a complete mess internally. Why would they spend money to reverse-viral attack another female idol? ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹

5. HYBE again, seriously stop being so low

6. This is just classic HYBE

7. They're starting again ã…‹ã…‹ Wonyoungie fighting

8. Wonyoungie, I love you ðŸ’–

9. Again, making controversies that don't exist

10. This makes her even more likable ã…Ž

11. Fake news. F*ck, they are going on a full-scale attack against female idols

12. HYBE again. Stop tormenting others, this is such a mess

13. I seriously just want HYBE to get kicked out of the entertainment industry

14. But I feel like they only target female idols nowadays... why would you live like that?

15. Nobody in China cares; they don't care about what was said in this post too. They are just busy calling her pretty and whatnot

16. I'm living in China and nobody cares. What is this bullsh*t....

17. People started to become suspicious of their negative virality towards aespa so they are changing their target to IVE? They went from Karina to Jang Wontoung and then from Jang Wonyoung, back to Karina
