[theqoo] THE REASON THE MOST POPULAR INTERNATIONAL MARRIAGE PARTNER CHOICE FOR KOREAN WOMEN ARE VIETNAMESE MEN

It has been found that Vietnamese nationals are now the most common nationality among foreign men who remarry Korean women. Until the early 2000s, Japanese men were the most common, but recently Vietnam has risen to first place. However, there is more behind these statistics. The increase is largely due to Vietnamese women who married Korean men, acquired Korean citizenship, later divorced, and then remarried Vietnamese men residing in Korea. In other words, “former” Vietnamese women and “current” Vietnamese men are meeting and marrying.

According to an analysis of microdata from Statistics Korea, the nationality of foreign husbands whom Korean women remarried in 2022 was most commonly Vietnamese (556 cases). This was followed by Chinese (446), American (141), Filipino (46), and Japanese (33). This marks a significant change. From 1993 to 2003, Japanese men were the most common partners in international remarriages involving Korean women. In 2003 alone, the numbers were Japan (1,158), China (808), and the United States (277). Vietnam accounted for only five cases at that time.

The reason Vietnamese nationals have become the largest group among foreign men marrying Korean women is the increase in naturalized Korean women originally from Vietnam. In fact, of the 556 Korean women who remarried Vietnamese men in 2022, 482 (86.7%) were naturalized Koreans. Of those 482, excluding two whose original nationality could not be identified, all 480 (100%) were originally Vietnamese citizens. This means that women who were originally Vietnamese married Korean men, later divorced, and then remarried Vietnamese men living in Korea.

This trend is likely to continue. In particular, in 2022, 3,319 Vietnamese women married Korean men—the highest number among international marriages. As the number of Vietnamese women naturalizing as Korean citizens increases, the likelihood that, after divorce, they will remarry Vietnamese men who are gradually increasing in number in Korea is expected to rise naturally.

However, concerns have also been raised about sham marriages aimed at acquiring Korean nationality. One alleged method involves a Vietnamese woman entering into a fraudulent marriage with a Korean man to obtain Korean citizenship, divorcing after naturalization, and then bringing a Vietnamese man to Korea to remarry, enabling him to acquire Korean nationality as well.

1. Just never give up your nationality for anyone

2. Those Hannam f*ckers seriously

3. I only pity the ids

4. Frankly, this can be seen as an issue related to Korean men who engage in brokered or marriages of convenience. If a marriage begins through a financial arrangement, it raises questions about the likelihood of long-term marital stability
(t/n: A marriage of convenience refers to a form of marriage where the groom's family pays the bride's family money or property in exchange for the purchase. It represents an impersonal marriage practice that treats the spouse as property. The family's financial goals often take precedence over the bride's wishes. In modern society, this is a social issue often criticized as a violation of women's rights and an illegal crime.)

5. In the end, the culprit is a Hannam

6. Why are we giving up our nationality to everyone

7. We're giving out free citizenships and immigrations, we're such pushovers ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹

8. Ah this is insane ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹

9. The Hannams and their marriages of convenience f*ck

10. Give them immigration status, why give them our nationality?
