[theqoo] 76,000 PEOPLE GATHERED AT THE BTS CONCERT IN GWANGHWAMUN... 25% FOREIGNERS

While various organizations have released conflicting estimates regarding the number of attendees at the BTS concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on the 21st, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has released official data compiled from mobile network and public transportation usage information from that time. According to this data, approximately 76,000 people gathered in the vicinity of the concert venue.

19,000 Foreigners, 25% of the Total

According to Seoul Metropolitan Government’s “resident population” data released on the 26th, the resident population in the Gwanghwamun and City Hall Station areas between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on the 21st, when the concert took place, totaled 75,927 people. The resident population data is a figure derived from analyzing the actual number of people present at a specific location and time by combining information from mobile carriers and public transportation card payment data, such as subway transactions. A Seoul Metropolitan Government official explained, “The resident population data includes foreigners staying in the country for 90 days or less,” adding, “It is the data that most closely reflects the actual scale.”

The Dong-A Ilbo analyzed population data from 18 250-meter grid units covering the area from Gwanghwamun—where safety personnel were stationed on the day of the BTS concert, to City Hall Station.

According to the data, there were 56,757 South Korean nationals and 19,170 foreigners on the day of the concert, with foreigners accounting for approximately 25% of all visitors. Among them, 13,889 were long-term foreign residents (staying 91 days or more), more than double the number of short-term foreign visitors (5,281). This indicates that foreign residents in Korea, such as international students and workers, accounted for a larger proportion than tourists.

By nationality, Thailand had the highest number with 1,740 visitors, followed by Vietnam (1,184), India (1,126), and Japan (1,098). The “Other” category, which includes countries outside the top 21 major visitors to Korea, totaled 6,462, indicating that foreigners of diverse nationalities attended the event.

100,000? 40,000? Why the Discrepancy?

The significant differences in estimated concert attendance figures among various organizations stem from variations in counting methods and scope. Immediately after the concert, the organizer, HYBE, estimated the number of visitors at 104,000. According to industry sources, HYBE calculated this figure by including not only the area around the venue but also adjacent commercial districts such as Myeong-dong, as well as people simply passing through the area.

In contrast, Seoul City’s real-time urban data estimated the maximum number of visitors on the same day to be approximately 48,000. However, this figure has limitations: it does not account for short-term foreign visitors, and due to the nature of cell tower data, there may be overlaps or omissions with the populations of nearby buildings or commercial facilities, resulting in a count that is lower than the actual number.
