Shinsegae Group has issued an apology after controversy arose over an internal employee at E-Mart allegedly intercepting gift certificates that had been sent to fans by Jaemin, a member of the idol group NCT. The company stated that it will strengthen management standards related to the issuance and exchange of gift certificates to prevent a recurrence.
According to reporting by Busan Ilbo on the 16th, Shinsegae Group is currently conducting an internal investigation into the E-Mart Gumi branch. The issue occurred the previous day (the 15th), when a large number of Shinsegae gift certificates (worth 100,000 won each) were exchanged at the Gumi store before the store officially opened, allegedly by an internal employee. The total value of the exchanged certificates is reported to be 3 million won. These gift certificates had been sent by NCT member Jaemin to fans in celebration of White Day.
On the 14th, Jaemin sent 30 Shinsegae gift certificates worth 100,000 won each to fans through the fan communication platform Bubble. Fans attempted to participate in an “open run” at E-Mart stores to exchange them for physical gift certificates. However, at the Gumi branch, all of the certificates had already been exchanged before the store even opened.
Fans therefore raised suspicions that an employee at the E-Mart Gumi branch exchanged the certificates in advance and took them.
One user who posted on the social media platform X wrote, “If an employee exchanged the gift certificates before business hours and took them, isn’t that clearly theft?”
There were also claims in some circles that the E-Mart Gumi employee who allegedly took the certificates had resigned, but this was confirmed to be untrue.
Shinsegae Group, which operates E-Mart, stated that it will take action based on the results of the internal investigation and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
A Shinsegae Group representative said, “We apologize for the inconvenience caused to customers who use E-Mart. We are currently conducting an internal investigation into the circumstances, and depending on the results, we will take follow-up measures and strengthen management standards related to the issuance and exchange of gift certificates to prevent recurrence.”
Stores usually have preparation time before opening and might turn on machines early during that time. The real question is whether using them then is actually prohibited by the rules. That probably depends on internal regulations
