[theqoo] HAS THE INVESTIGATION ON BANG SIHYUK HIT A HALT? "UNDER INVESTIGATION IN THE NATIONAL OFFICE"

Police investigating Bang Sihyuk, who has been booked on charges including violations of the Capital Markets Act, appear to have entered a period of deliberation.

At a regular press briefing on the 23rd, Park Jung-bo was asked about the progress of the investigation and said, “The National Office of Investigation under the National Police Agency is continuing its legal review,” adding, “At this point, there is no schedule for an additional summons.”

He added, “Based on the investigation so far and its results, we are coordinating opinions while conducting a legal review together with the National Office of Investigation.”

Regarding the possibility of further questioning, he said, “If the National Office of Investigation directs that supplementary investigation is necessary, we will proceed,” drawing a line at any immediate plans for another summons.

Both inside and outside the police, there is analysis that the investigative team is facing a dilemma over how to handle Bang’s custody status. As the case involves alleged economic crimes tied to 190 billion won, proving the charges is extremely complex.

Another factor cited for the extended review period is that, regarding the same matter, the Financial Supervisory Service’s special judicial police unit is conducting a separate investigation under the direction of prosecutors.

Police plan to decide whether to seek custody measures against Bang depending on the results of the legal review and investigative direction from the National Office of Investigation. If, during the review process, the allegations are deemed insufficiently substantiated, there is also the possibility that the investigation could return to square one or drift into a prolonged stalemate.
