Prime Minister Kim Min-seok referenced the light stick culture seen during past impeachment protests while discussing BTS’s comeback performance at Gwanghwamun.
On the afternoon of the 21st, Prime Minister Kim visited HYBE’s headquarters in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, where he held a town hall meeting with employees.
During the meeting, he mentioned how light stick culture became a topic of discussion at impeachment rallies during the martial law crisis, saying, “It was because we were able to protect freedom that today’s Korean Wave (Hallyu) exists. The roots of Hallyu lie in liberal democracy.”
He added, “Holding BTS’s comeback stage at Gwanghwamun Square, where that freedom was defended with light sticks, has very significant meaning.”
BTS, HYBE’s main group, is set to make a comeback on March 20 with their 5th full-length album Arirang. The album contains 14 tracks and explores universal emotions such as the group’s identity, longing, and deep love.
Ahead of their comeback, BTS planned a new promotional campaign utilizing areas around Gwanghwamun and Sungnyemun. The Cultural Heritage Administration reviewed HYBE’s request for location use and filming permits and granted conditional approval.
Prime Minister Kim stated, “Amid the new momentum that BTS’s full-group return will bring this year, K-pop will once again amaze the world,” adding, “The government will spare no support in firmly establishing Korea as a leading cultural nation, acting as a strong partner backing the creativity and innovation of the industry.”
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, HYBE employees addressed him as “Min-seok” rather than “Prime Minister,” following internal company naming conventions.
In addition to meeting employees, Prime Minister Kim also met with HYBE CEO Lee Jae-sang, Vice President Kim Tae-ho, and members of the group ENHYPEN, where they discussed the K-pop industry.

1. I can't picture how much HYBE spent on this behind the scene ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹
2. Ah this is seriously nonsenseã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ BTS' fans were telling each other not to use their light stick for protest
3. I'm gonna barf from how much they're glamorizing this
4. Why is Kim Min-seok like that? Is he crazy?
5. What kind of bullsh*t is this? I'm not even an NCT fan, but I know that the most popular light stick during the impeachment was their green light sticks
6. Are you kidding me?
7. The fact: the fandom of the group that this company wrote about in their internal document are the ones who were the first at using their light sticks during the protest. HYBE's fandoms were actually telling each other not to use their light sticks. So why is he praising HYEB???
8. We can forget about Bang Sihyuk going to jail ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹
9. You'd think that BTS were the ones who organized the impeachment walk
10. ARMY didn't do anything during the protest, what are they saying?
