It's not like they branch out into acting the way SNSD did but they're still actively promoting on stage. so I really don't get why they leave SM in the first place.
Both fans and the general public clearly like the concepts and level of quality that are carefully crafted by SM, but then they go to some unknown agency and end up in this awkward in-between, relying only on their own confidence while their sense falls off... and then they flop badly
Even if they don't have the same level of buzz as before, staying in SM at least guarantees a certain level of artistry. That's why Taeyeon is honestly so f*cking impressive, she clearly knows where she can shine the most and chooses not to leave.
Things like how fans are treated or comeback scheduling can be a mess, but it's not easy to find a place that can elevate the musical quality to the level artists themselves aim for

Honestly, looking at how even older or less popular members still get opportunities here and there, it really does seem better to stay in SM. Just recently, even Hyoyeon and Johnny had brief spikes in popularity through YouTube, and Shindong keeps appearing steadily on variety showsㅋㅋㅋ Meanwhile, for those who moved to other agencies, you don't even hear updates about what they're doing

I don't know about everything else, but aside from those who switch to acting, the rest who leave tend to be the ones people don't really pay attention to anyway. Unlike other companies that focus all their energy on a few top idols, SM tends to consistently release solo work for all members. It's just that the general public doesn't really notice, it's not about "inflated egos," there's not much other reason

Male idols in Korea are basically all full of scandals and inflated egos. It's unrealistic, but if there were a super capable male idol like Taeyeon, he probably would've left long ago ㅋㅋ

But that's kind of outdated too. That worked when there weren't many soloists, these days, listen to recent solo songs. There are way too many, so the song quality and choreography quality are a mess

What surprises me more about SM is that they don't really phase out older idols who don't seem to have much competitiveness anymore
