Photo caption: Actors, I’m sorry ㅠㅠ
Because of the post I uploaded yesterday, I want to apologize to the actors who were hurt by it. Reading actress IU’s SNS post and actor Byun’s handwritten letter made my heart ache.
I wrote that we need to reorganize the system so situations like this won’t happen again, but it seems my words came across too harshly. Even I sometimes get confused about historical terminology. It’s unreasonable to expect actors to fully understand such specialized terms and contexts as well.
A strong historical advisory system should exist to protect actors, but because it is always unstable and lacking, actors end up becoming the ones sacrificed. That’s why I wrote about proposing alternatives for historical research institutes. That way, the actors we love won’t have to shed tears again.
Instead of attacking people, we should pool our wisdom to build a stronger historical advisory system.
I hope government agencies such as the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will allocate at least some budget toward this area.
When actors sign contracts, I hope historical consultation, who provided it, where it came from, and to what extent, will become one of the important criteria in selecting projects.
I ask production companies to invest reasonable time and money into historical research institutes.
I hope historical research institutes will provide safe and verified databases, built on systematic research, to help films and dramas construct the worlds they need.
That way, the writer’s imagination, the director’s vision, and the actor’s performances can all be protected.
And that way, Korean K-dramas can give even greater healing and inspiration to people around the world.
This is written by someone who loves and enjoys K-dramas

Sigh… another historical distortion controversy. At this point, are we goldfish or something? (Sorry, goldfish.) Right now, we are leading Hallyu culture across the world. Dramas and movies? It’s not just us watching them anymore. People all over the world are watching. Our image is being rapidly spread and imprinted.
Now we need a system that matches that level.
But we either still don’t have such a system, or it exists only at a cottage-industry level.
Historical terminology, costumes, dialogue… controversies over historical distortion keep happening every time, yet nothing ever changes.
I hope people will respect the field of history.
Actors are paid hundreds of millions of won without hesitation, yet why do people try to settle historical verification costs with just a few hundred thousand won? Why are they so reluctant to spend on it?
And why is the time required for historical research and verification treated as so unimportant in production?
I also hope the historical academia community will establish a dedicated historical verification research institute.
I mean a place where producers could simply entrust their projects and have scripts, costumes, and sets all safely handled in a one-stop process. Sigh… though that would require investment…ㅠㅠ
I think it’s time to stop having these same worries over and over, so I wanted to make this suggestion. Shouldn’t actors be able to focus on acting with peace of mind as well?
Everyone worked hard to create a good historical drama, so getting criticized like this must feel discouraging…ㅠㅠ
