The Grammy Awards, a U.S. pop music awards ceremony, will introduce a new category for Asian pop music, including K-pop.
ABC News reported on the 16th (local time) that the Grammy Awards will add five new categories to next year’s ceremony: “Best Asian Pop Music Performance,” “Best Latin Song,” “Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance,” “Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance,” and “Best Traditional Folk Album.”
Among these, the “Best Asian Pop Music Performance” category was created to honor the excellence of Asian pop music, including K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop, that makes significant use of the language(s) of one or more Asian countries, and is either created by artists of Asian origin or recognized locally in Asia.
The Grammy Awards organizers explained that they decided to introduce this category in recognition of the growing influence that Asian pop music, including K-pop, is having on the global music industry.
In the past, K-pop artists such as BTS and BLACKPINK’s Rosé have been nominated for major Grammy Awards but have yet to win. However, this year, “Golden,” the soundtrack from the Netflix animated series “K-Pop Demon Hunters,” became the first K-pop song to win a Grammy Award.
However, with the introduction of a category specifically targeting Asian pop, expectations are rising that K-pop artists, including BTS, will take home awards.
In particular, BTS is drawing even more attention as they continue to enjoy long-lasting popularity, having swept the No. 1 spots on both the Billboard “Hot 100” and “Billboard 200” with their fifth studio album “Arirang,” released this year with the full group lineup.
The 69th Grammy Awards, which will feature the newly introduced “Best Asian Pop Music Performance” category, will take place on February 7 of next year.

1. Hm... I don't think it would be a good thing
2. I feel like they made this category to discriminate Bangtan even more. They are doing this to a group who has been nominated in the main award category for several years nowã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹
3. I don't know if they're doing this on purpose, but it's ridiculous that they wrote the article with such enthusiasm about a category designed to discriminate
4. ;;; I'm so fed up with the Grammys
5. Is this even a good thing?
6. Even if there's an Asian division, I don't think they'll announce it on TVã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ They'll probably just post it on their own website
7. Not at all~~ Just look at the ratings~~ But they will probably just put them in the candidates
8. Ugh, them and their "Asian pop"ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹
9. So they are trying to put Asians in a different category?
10. But even Bangtan couldn't win that award, you have to write the lyrics in your own language to win it
