[theqoo] EXCLUSIVE] "WILL WORLD CUP BROADCASTS BE CUT OFF AFTER THE 29TH?"... EVIDENCES SUGGEST JTBC HAS FAILED TO PAY RIGHT FEES TO FIFA

"JTBC’s financial risks surrounding the broadcast rights for the 2026 North and Central America World Cup have emerged as the biggest variable in the broadcasting industry. Amid the ongoing fallout from a subsidiary of the JoongAng Group filing for rehabilitation proceedings, industry sources have reported that JTBC has been unable to pay a portion of the World Cup broadcast rights fees owed to FIFA as scheduled.

According to multiple sources in the broadcasting and sports marketing industries on the 23rd, JTBC has recently been in discussions with FIFA regarding the payment schedule for World Cup broadcasting rights fees and plans to ensure the continued broadcast of the tournament. One source stated, "I understand there has been significant internal pressure due to the combined burden of broadcasting rights fees and sluggish advertising and resale revenue. I believe negotiations are underway to prevent the worst-case scenario of a broadcast suspension."

After securing the domestic broadcasting rights for the 2026 North America World Cup, JTBC has been negotiating with terrestrial broadcasters to resell those rights. However, negotiations with MBC and SBS failed to reach a final agreement, and JTBC signed a joint broadcasting agreement only with KBS. As a result, domestic coverage of this tournament is being led by JTBC and KBS.

The issue is the exorbitant broadcast rights fees. During its earlier negotiations with the three terrestrial broadcasters, JTBC revealed that the broadcast rights fees for the 2026 North America, Central America, and Caribbean World Cup amounted to $125 million (190 billion won). Industry observers view the costs of securing broadcast rights for major sporting events, such as the World Cup and the Olympics, as one of the key factors contributing to the financial burden on the JoongAng Group.

On the 12th, JTBC defaulted on a 20.6 billion won securitized loan after failing to repay it upon maturity; subsequently, along with its major affiliates, including Joongang Holdings, Contentre Joongang, Megabox Joongang, and Joongang P&I, it filed a petition with the court to initiate rehabilitation proceedings. Amid intertwined issues involving broadcast content production, movie theaters, and investments in sports broadcasting rights, a group-wide liquidity crisis has come to the surface.

However, there are still many details that need to be clarified regarding allegations of unpaid broadcasting rights fees. The JoongAng Group has previously stated that its major businesses, including major sports broadcasts, will continue to operate without interruption, and explained that broadcasting rights fees are being paid sequentially in accordance with the contracts. Therefore, further verification is needed regarding whether there have actually been payment delays, the possibility of contractual sanctions from FIFA, and the potential for domestic broadcasts to be suspended.

With the national soccer team still in contention for a spot in the tournament, the uncertainty surrounding the World Cup broadcast rights is causing significant repercussions for both viewers and the broadcasting industry. Given that the domestic World Cup broadcast schedule could be subject to change depending on the outcome of negotiations between JTBC and FIFA, the industry’s attention is focused on the last-minute negotiations between the two sides.
