MTV portrayed Michael Jackson as someone suffering from the "superstar disease" and delusional. After that, Jack Black and Jimmy Fallon parodied Michael Jackson, mocking him in a ridiculous way

The prevailing opinion among fans is that the superstar shouldn'tt have attended the awards show just to celebrate his birthday, that the award looked too much like a trophy, that Michael had prepared an acceptance speech, and that MTV intentionally humiliated him.

It seems people were shocked that the mainstream American media treated him so harshly at the time, even though MTV was essentially a channel that Michael Jackson helped build. However, seeing how the saying "MTV is gone, but Michael is eternal" is still repeated today, it seems karma does exist.
