[theqoo] FIRST-EVER 'K-POP FANDOM AWARDS' TO BE HELD... 'FANOMENON' SET FOR DECEMBER 2027

The South Korean government and the country’s four major K-pop agencies (HYBE, JYP, SM, and YG) have teamed up to launch “FANOMENON,” a new global K-culture festival aimed at becoming a “Korean version of Coachella.” The project seeks to expand K-pop into a broader celebration of Korean culture, including food, fashion, gaming, and other cultural industries.

At a press conference on July 27, Culture Minister Choi Hwi-young and JYP founder Park Jin-young (J.Y. Park), co-chair of the Popular Culture Exchange Committee, unveiled the initiative. Park said the project has been in development for the past 10 months and emphasized that its goal is not simply to create a major event, but to build a sustainable future for K-culture.

Unlike typical government-led initiatives, Park stressed that the concept and planning are being driven by the entertainment companies, while the government acts as a supporting partner.

A key idea behind FANOMENON is treating fandom as an industry rather than just a consumer base. Park argued that K-pop fans actively promote artists and contribute to the industry’s success, making them partners instead of customers. He believes Korea can become the global leader in the “fandom industry.”

The project consists of three major initiatives:

- A global K-pop fandom awards ceremony beginning in December 2027 at Seoul Arena and KINTEX in Goyang.

- The FANOMENON Festival launching in Los Angeles in May 2028, before expanding to major cities worldwide.

- K-Culture Centers to be built in key global cities, showcasing Korean government organizations and businesses under one roof.

The annual Fandom Awards will recognize the Top 10 K-pop fandoms based on extensive data analysis measuring fan activity and influence. Rather than artists receiving awards, the winning fandoms will be honored, with artists accepting on their behalf.

The 2027 festival will feature:

- K-pop concerts and music broadcasts

- The fandom awards ceremony

- K-culture exhibitions and interactive experiences highlighting Korean food, fashion, games, and other industries

- Related events throughout Seoul’s major tourist districts

According to the Korea Culture & Tourism Institute, the six-day event is expected to attract 520,000 visitors, including 200,000 international tourists, and generate approximately ₩1 trillion (~ US$700 million) in economic impact. The government will support tourism promotion, immigration procedures, safety management, and participation by small and medium-sized Korean businesses, while private companies will oversee the planning, production, and marketing of the festival.
