Association Between Consumption of Low- and No-Calorie Artificial Sweeteners and Cognitive Decline: An 8-Year Prospective Study
- Journal: Neurology (American Academy of Neurology)
- Study type: An 8-year prospective cohort (observational) study.
- Participants: 12,772 Brazilian adults (average age approximately 52 years).
- Sweeteners examined: Aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame-K, erythritol, xylitol, sorbitol, and tagatose.
Key findings
- Participants in the highest sweetener-consumption group experienced an overall rate of cognitive decline that was approximately 62% faster than those in the lowest-consumption group. This difference was estimated to be equivalent to about 1.6 additional years of brain aging. The association was stronger among adults under 60 years of age and among people with diabetes.
Breaking new study: Processed no-calorie sweeteners found in Diet Coke, Gatorade Zero, Halo Top, and Extra Gum linked to a faster decline in memory and thinking skills. pic.twitter.com/jUqbQw7nts
