[theqoo] AN UNFAMILIAR IMMERSION THAT BREAKS THE MOLD... CORTIS'S EXPERIMENT THAT IS BREAKING THE "SHOW" ft. MORE MEDIA PRAISE

A clash with familiar expectations inevitably creates a sense of unfamiliarity. But sometimes, that unfamiliarity opens the door to a deeper kind of immersion.

The mixed reactions surrounding rookie group CORTIS's first solo tour, "PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN," held on the 18th at Inspire Arena in Incheon, stem from the group's bold departure from the conventional "show" formula that K-pop concerts are generally expected to follow.

Instead of relying on flashy visual spectacle, this unconventional concert chose intensity. The spaces that would normally be filled with intermission videos (VCRs) and multiple costume changes were instead occupied solely by the members' raw energy as they ran, sang, and breathed on stage. Rather than presenting an elaborate spectacle designed to tell a story, the concert served as a declaration that they intended to focus on the musical identity they embody in the present moment. The concert's title, "PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN," was an invitation to stop observing the performance through a camera lens and instead become an active participant in the sweat and excitement unfolding live before them.

The choice of Inspire Arena as the venue also carries an ironic message. While many fans find it inconveniently far away, its location highlights the current lack of large-scale pop music venues within Seoul. The fact that the group accepted the inconvenience in order to preserve the kind of stage they wanted to create underscores a broader infrastructure issue that Korea's popular music industry must address together.

CORTIS's first solo concert represents a meaningful experiment, demonstrating that a K-pop concert does not have to be a perfectly controlled multimedia spectacle, but can instead be a living, breathing experience. By deliberately subverting audience expectations, the performance ultimately created an even more absorbing and visceral connection. The concert stands as a clear turning point, showing how CORTIS's untamed energy can resonate with fans and continue to evolve. CORTIS will perform one more show at the same venue on the 19th.

They’re just incredibly arrogant from start to finish

[theqoo] SAME SONG, DIFFERENT STAGE... THE 'POWER OF REPETITION' DEMONSTRATED BY CORTIS

Repetition became a weapon rather than a weakness. CORTIS turned the conventional K-pop concert formula on its head.

Because the group does not yet have an extensive catalog of songs, several tracks appeared multiple times throughout the show. "GO!" and "FaSHioN" returned in remixed versions, while "TNT" was reimagined with a footwork-focused performance. Songs such as "YOUNGCREATORCREW" and "REDRED" were performed on both the main stage and the extended stage, with different staging and movement each time, creating a fresh atmosphere on every appearance.

The concert's structure has drawn a variety of interpretations within the industry. One insider commented:

"Repeating the same songs may have been a practical choice to compensate for the group's limited number of tracks. At the same time, however, it also appears to have been an attempt to expand the performances through remixes, different choreography, and varied stage movement. Ultimately, it was fairly effective in gradually building the audience's energy."

This approach aligns more closely with the conventions of overseas hip-hop concerts and music festivals than with traditional K-pop concerts. A well-known example is American rapper Travis Scott, who has performed "FE!N" ten consecutive times during a single show and, in the past, repeated "goosebumps" as many as fifteen times.

The same philosophy is reflected in the title of CORTIS's tour, "PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN." The message is simple: put away your phone and fully surrender yourself to the live performance. Before the concert, the members emphasized:

"All you have to do is have fun with us until you're exhausted."

"We've prepared this show with the highest priority on creating a stage where we can move around freely and everyone can just let loose."

Rather than trying to conceal their relatively small repertoire, CORTIS built the concert by rearranging and reimagining the 12 songs they have created. The performance demonstrated that the same song can become an entirely different experience depending on its arrangement, choreography, and audience participation. It marked the beginning of what could be called the distinctive CORTIS style of live performance.
