Look, I get that severe thinness has been a huge talking point lately. Earlier this year, we saw a lot of idols looking extremely skinny, a trend I’d say went global largely due to Ozempic, with artists like Ariana Grande also looking noticeably thinner. I’ve always maintained that feeling concerned is completely valid, especially when some idols look like they’re on the verge of collapsing.
What I can’t stand, though, is the weird and hypocritical way many fans talk about these idols, skinny shaming is a very real thing. I’ve been in the K-pop community for 10 years, and I vividly remember the first time kpop fans openly bodyshamed idols, it was during Blackpink debut. Many newer fans might not remember or weren't around, but back then, people literally called them skeletons. Lisa and Rosé received endless bodyshaming during their early years. I also Sowon from GFRIEND getting torn apart for being so thin, instead of showing genuine concern for her well being, people just targeted her body because her thinness unsettled them.
As Kpop went global, we saw this exact dynamic play out with Wonyoung, with the rise of tiktok , people constantly labeled her with derogatory terms like "skeleton" or "bag of bones." More recently, we've seen it with Liz and Giselle. I’ve seen countless comments mocking Liz’s figure n tiktok and with Giselle, instead of actually caring about her health, people were focused on how she was "losing her curves especially her butt" That really bothered me because if someone is genuinely struggling with an ed, hyper fixating on something that superficial is completely out of touch. My point is that k-pop fans, in most cases, are extremely superficial and just use this whole topic for fanwars. That's how I know they never actually cared and only wanted to use it as an excuse to hate on idols they dislike. I know many aren't like this, but tiktok is flooded with these kinds of people, and if you call them out, they'll just fake concern right after insulting or mocking them.
