[instiz] [EXCLUSIVE] FALLOUT FROM MIN HEEJIN'S REVERSE VIRAL ALLEGATIONS... "LAWSUIT COULD EXTEND TO HYBE'S HEADQUARTERS"

It has been reported that a U.S. attorney recently met by Min Heejin, former CEO of ADOR, stated that a lawsuit involving TAG PR, suspected of running a so-called “reverse-viral” campaign to smear an opposing party, could be expanded to include HYBE’s headquarters in Korea. Min publicly revealed on the 19th via social media that she had met with this attorney.

On the 23rd, Min’s legal representative told Hankyoreh, “Matthew Donald Umhofer, the attorney Min recently met in Seoul, explained that due to the structure of U.S. litigation, the scope of the lawsuit could be expanded, through the discovery process, to include not only HYBE America but also HYBE’s headquarters in Korea.”

Attorney Umhofer represents Stephanie Jones, founder of the U.S. PR firm Jonesworks, who claims she was subjected to defamatory attacks by TAG PR. The reverse-viral website minheejin.net, suspected of targeting Min, was revealed through the lawsuit’s discovery process.

According to the representative, Umhofer explained in detail, citing U.S. cases, how “aggressive PR” campaigns operate. These include creating fake websites targeting specific individuals, producing and distributing maliciously edited videos of past interviews, and artificially amplifying negative public opinion through technical means such as bots. He reportedly stated that such actions could go beyond simple defamation and constitute “illegal civil fraud,” in which technology is used to fabricate false critical sentiment.

The representative added, “Umhofer pointed out that the structure of the aggressive PR tactics used in the Hollywood actress Blake Lively case is very similar to the reverse-viral allegations surrounding Min,” and said that “it is difficult to rule out the possibility that the same actions carried out by TAG PR on behalf of actor-director Justin Baldoni, who attacked Lively, were repeated on behalf of HYBE.” It was also noted that much of this conduct has reportedly been corroborated through concrete evidence such as text messages and emails.

It was further emphasized that TAG PR had been a company owned by HYBE through HYBE America, which raises the possibility that the lawsuit could be directed at HYBE’s headquarters. The representative explained, “The strategy, according to Umhofer, is to first pursue discovery against HYBE America, headquartered in Santa Monica, and if evidence of coordination or directives from the Korean headquarters emerges during that process, the lawsuit could be expanded to include HYBE’s headquarters in Korea.” This is seen as an effort to trace potential organizational involvement by leveraging the U.S. courts’ strong authority to compel the submission of documents.

The representative said, “We were told that allegations of a corporation systematically undermining a successful female creator are extremely sensitive in U.S. society,” adding that “Umhofer indicated that potential damages claims could start at tens of millions of dollars (hundreds of billions of won).” He added that the matter would be revealed step by step following further legal review.

Allegations that a company systematically defamed and sabotaged Min were first reported on December 10 last year in a Hankyoreh exclusive (“HYBE-owned PR firm ran ‘reverse-viral’ campaign against Min Hee-jin”… sued in the U.S.).

In response, HYBE stated, “This issue involves claims made unilaterally by a party in a legal dispute unrelated to HYBE or HYBE America,” and countered, “We have never been involved in any activities mentioned in the complaint other than legitimate promotional work.”
