Song Mino, a member of the idol group WINNER, has been indicted over allegations that he left his assigned workplace without authorization while serving as a public service worker. Prosecutors have reportedly stated in the indictment that “the total number of days Song was absent without leave amounts to 102.”
According to the indictment obtained by JoongAng Ilbo on the 11th, the Seoul Western District Prosecutors’ Office specified that “while serving as a public service worker at the Mapo-gu Facilities Management Corporation and a community welfare facility, Song was absent without authorization for a total of 102 days, thereby leaving his service without justifiable cause.” Public service workers do not work on weekends or public holidays, and out of the 1 year and 9 months of service, the actual number of required working days is about 430. If the prosecution’s claim is true, Song would have been absent for roughly one-quarter of his required service days. Under Article 89-2 of the Military Service Act, “any person who leaves their service for eight days or more without justifiable cause shall be punished by imprisonment of up to three years.”
According to the indictment, Song’s unauthorized absences reportedly increased as his discharge date approached. His service period ran from March 24, 2023, to December 23, 2024. The prosecution’s list of alleged offenses states that while he was absent for only one day between March and May 2023, the number rose to 14 days in November 2024, one month before his discharge. In July 2024, during the nationwide monsoon season, he was absent for a total of 19 days. He was originally scheduled to work 23 days that month, meaning he worked only four days.
Prosecutors also believe that a manager, identified as “A,” was involved in Song’s absences. According to the indictment, A was responsible for managing Song’s attendance as a public service worker. The prosecution alleges that “when Song said he would not come to work due to oversleeping or fatigue, A permitted it, and then falsely prepared and approved documents as if Song had reported to work as normal.” It is further alleged that A arbitrarily processed Song’s remaining annual leave and sick leave days in order to facilitate the scheme.
The indictment also details specific circumstances of alleged collusion. Prosecutors stated that “around 6:09 p.m. on May 29, 2023, A sent Song a message saying, ‘I have training tomorrow and won’t be coming in, so see you on May 31,’ informing him in advance that A would not be at work. Song then did not report to work on May 30 at his own discretion. Afterwards, A prepared the daily service log as if Song had attended work.” May 29, the day A sent the message, was also the day photos were posted on Song’s sister’s social media account showing that Song had visited San Francisco to attend her wedding.
These facts were reportedly uncovered through supplementary investigation after prosecutors took over the case in May of last year. On December 30, the Criminal Division 1 of the Seoul Western District Prosecutors’ Office (Chief Prosecutor Won Shin-hye) stated, “We secured objective evidence through mobile phone forensics and GPS records, and based on this, identified additional unauthorized absences beyond those initially forwarded by the police.” Song and A were indicted on charges of violating the Military Service Act.
Previously, it was reported that Song largely acknowledged the allegations of absence during the police investigation stage. However, his agency, YG Entertainment, stated when the controversy first arose that “the sick leave Song used was an extension of treatment he had been receiving prior to enlistment, and all other leave was used in accordance with regulations.” Attempts to reach Song’s attorney for further comment were unsuccessful.
The first hearing in the case was initially scheduled for March 24, but after Song’s side submitted a request to postpone the hearing on the 5th, the schedule was adjusted. The Seoul Western District Court is now set to hold the first hearing on April 21.
