The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) compared BTS to global pop star Taylor Swift, describing their return after about four years as a prime example of the “superfan era.” According to the report, a fan from the Philippines spent about $1,300 (approximately 1.95 million won) on a full set of albums, clothing, and merchandise at a BTS pop-up store.
BTS is projected to generate around $1.3 billion in revenue through their world tour, including ticket sales, merchandise, and albums. This places them among the most profitable acts in the global music industry, following Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour, which earned about $2 billion between 2023 and 2024.
Domestic financial analysts are even more optimistic. IBK Investment & Securities estimates BTS’s world tour revenue will reach at least 2.9 trillion KRW, while IM Securities projects ticket sales alone could total around 1.5 trillion KRW.
The WSJ analyzed BTS’s revenue model, noting that they reduce travel costs by holding multiple concerts in the same city and encourage fans to travel instead. They also use a strategy of placing the stage at the center of the stadium to provide a 360-degree view, allowing them to sell all seats.
In addition, BTS’s agency HYBE offers early ticket access through its fan platform “Weverse,” enabling highly dedicated fans to secure a large portion of seats before general sales, further maximizing revenue.
Bloomberg reported that the Gwanghwamun concert is expected to generate consumer spending comparable to a major holiday. The total economic impact, including airfare, accommodations, food, merchandise, and streaming, is estimated at around $177 million (approximately 266.6 billion won), exceeding the average per-city economic impact of Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour ($50–70 million).
The New York Times (NYT) estimates that more than 250,000 people will attend the event, noting that BTS’s return and new album release will have a positive effect not only on South Korea’s economy but also on its cultural influence, or “soft power.”
Following the Gwanghwamun performance, BTS will kick off a world tour next month at Goyang Stadium, holding a total of 82 concerts across 34 cities on five continents through March next year.
