[deep-dive debate] WEARING AN IVORY DRESS AT A WEDDING

A friend is getting married, but it’s my first time attending a wedding and I don’t have a proper "guest outfit." Since I’m currently job hunting, I can’t really afford to buy anything new; the only thing I own is an ivory dress. I don't plan on taking photos so is it okay to wear it?

Is it a nuisance vs. Is it okay to wear?

In my experience, it helps to simply avoid doing things where you're unsure if you might be a nuisance to others

No no, just go with a sharp black suit. You surely have an outfit at home that you bought for interviews, right? Wear that. Even if you aren't getting your photo taken, showing up in ivory will only hurt your reputation

Some brides might not care, but there’s bound to be someone there who speaks ill of it, so why go out of your way to do it?

I wouldn't necessarily call it a nuisance, but I don't recommend it because it's the kind of outfit that invites gossip. For a friend's wedding, a neat pair of slacks or straight-leg jeans paired with a shirt is perfectly fine. Even with jeans, wearing loafers can keep the look from appearing too casual

You don't need to dress up excessively for a wedding; just avoid things like graphic tees, casual wear, stretched-out collars, or elastic-waist shorts, and you'll be fine. If you're worried that wearing an ivory dress might be considered rude to your friend, it's best not to wear it. If you notice even the slightest change in your friend's expression, you might start feeling uncomfortable, wondering if they dislike your outfit.
