YouTuber Park Wi’s past attitude toward blind YouTuber One Shot Hansol (OSH) has belatedly come under scrutiny. This comes after viewers criticized Park Wi’s remarks as rude, particularly because he repeatedly questioned whether OSH was actually visually impaired and appeared surprised by his abilities.
Back in 2022, OSH, a visually impaired YouTuber, featured a meeting with Park Wi on his YouTube channel.
At a campsite, OSH helped pull Park Wi’s wheelchair. Seeing him skillfully maneuver the wheelchair, Park Wi questioned him, saying, “How can you do this when you can’t see right now? I’m going to test you here.”
When Park Wi did not give him directions, OSH headed down a different path. Park Wi then acknowledged, “Okay, you really can’t see.” Even afterward, however, Park Wi continued to question him, saying, “Be honest. You can see everything, can’t you?”
After they arrived at the tent, OSH started a fire with a torch and grilled meat. Watching him cut the meat using his sense of touch, Park Wi said, “I’ll really give you credit. I admit you’re not faking it,” followed by, “I’m suddenly getting annoyed.”
Park Wi then handed OSH some shrimp and suggested that he try peeling them. After OSH peeled all the shrimp, Park Wi exclaimed to the production crew, “He actually peeled the shrimp!” clearly surprised.
The video has recently been brought back into the spotlight amid the controversy surrounding Park Wi’s criticism of a public service worker. Some viewers are now calling Park Wi’s attitude toward OSH rude.
In particular, critics say that Park Wi’s repeated suspicion of OSH, as well as his surprise at seeing him peel shrimp, comes across as treating ordinary abilities of a visually impaired person as something extraordinarily unusual.
They argue that it is uncomfortable to assume that someone cannot perform a particular action simply because they are visually impaired, or to behave as though one needs to see them successfully perform the action before believing that they are actually disabled.
There were also reactions criticizing Park Wi for having OSH personally start the fire and grill the meat. The issue was not OSH's ability to perform these tasks by using his other senses, but rather Park Wi’s repeated expressions of doubt and surprise while watching him do so.
Netizens commented things such as, “Having a visually impaired person grill meat crosses the line,” “Why would you have a visually impaired person use a torch?” and “Who is he to decide whether to ‘give him credit’ or not?”
